FOURTEEN

As I rounded the bend, the sky was lit up in a glow. There was a fire somewhere. I turned onto the dirt road, feeling sicker by the second as I drove closer. Just beyond the trees, the flames grew brighter. And as the house came into view, I could see a line of fire at the rear of the property.

Candy’s Wagoneer was parked a safe distance from the house, but she wasn’t in it. She was standing in the yard with the Squad as the inferno approached. Mia was missing. She must have been inside the house, still in her trance-like state.

“Are they crazy?” I whispered.

I parked next to her car and got out, feeling the heat hit my skin as I watched the fire begin to circle the house.

“Hurry, Charley!” Candy yelled, beckoning me as the flames continued to spread.

Hurry where?

I ran toward her without really thinking but came to an abrupt halt when common sense kicked in. “What are you doing?” I yelled back. All the way out here, no one would see that fire, and something told me they hadn’t called the fire department. “We have to get out of here!”

“No one’s going anywhere!” Katherine said, her eyes fixing on mine as she raised her hand, palm side up, and pointed at me.

With a crook of her finger, I was airborne, hurtling toward them. I flew past the fast-moving flames threatening to seal off the only point of escape. The fire accelerated as I hit the ground next to the witches, and our only chance of getting out alive slipped away. We were trapped.

I climbed to my feet and checked the back side of the house for a break in the wall of flames, but there wasn’t one. The fire had formed a perfect ring around us, and the grand Victorian was about to become a witches’ pyre.

After running back to the front, panic set in. I grabbed Candy’s arm and dug my fingers into her skin. “We’re all going to die!”

She yanked her arm free and slapped me across the face, knocking some sense into me. “Sorry, honey, but no one’s dying today.” Then she grabbed my hand while Katherine took the other. The five of us linked up and formed a circle, moving closer to the house to escape the intense heat.

As the flames snapped at the sky, the witches started to chant. But the language was foreign to me. “I don’t know what you’re saying. What should I do?”

Candy squeezed my hand tighter. “Focus and pray for rain.”

Rain? Rain wasn’t going to save us. We’d need a monsoon.

I closed my eyes and tried to push the fear away. To concentrate. The heat was suffocating, and all I could hear was the crackling of approaching death. But as I focused harder on the light within me, a miracle happened—my mind started to calm. The sound of the fire grew quieter, and I began to drift. The chanting trailed off into a hum in the distance as the orange flicker of flames behind my eyelids softened to a blue glow.
